Small-town Fourth of July parade with families marching and waving American flags

Morning Parade and Flag Tradition

We start at home by raising Old Glory and offering a thank-you to those who served. Then we head to the Alamo Heights Independence Day Parade that steps off at 10 a.m. Neighborhood floats and bike brigades let kids wave flags and grab candy. It feels like a friendly small-town party that sets our patriotic mood.

Downtown Stars and Stripes Parade

If we want a bigger scene, downtown’s Stars and Stripes Parade rolls down Houston Street at 11 a.m. Vintage military vehicles lead marching bands while tall buildings throw welcome shade. Parking can be tight so we often ride share. Either parade delivers a strong patriotic jolt without tiring the family.

Salute at The Alamo

Next we stroll to Plaza de Valero for the free Stars and Stripes Salute. The Air Force Band of the West plays while kids enjoy crafts and splash misters. Food trucks line the plaza so lunch is handled without leaving the fun. History and hot dogs make a perfect late morning combo.

Lunch at Historic Market Square

If the plaza feels crowded we grab lunch at Market Square’s July Fourth Weekend Celebration. Live Tejano bands set the soundtrack and shaded tables keep everyone cool. I never skip chicken-on-a-stick and a frosty agua fresca. After eating we browse indoor shops for a welcome dose of air conditioning.

Afternoon at Woodlawn Lake Park

By 3 p.m. we arrive at Woodlawn Lake Park, the city’s main Independence Day bash. A live DJ, carnival games, and vendor booths keep everyone smiling. Fitness lovers hit an 8 a.m. pool Zumba though I save energy for the kids’ inflatable slides. Admission is free which makes the fun even sweeter.

Fireworks Finale

We spread a blanket at 8:45 p.m. and hand out glow sticks to the kids. At 9:30 p.m. the Woodlawn Lake fireworks launch and mirror perfectly on the water. I hug my children and feel thankful for freedom and community. Twenty minutes later the dazzling finale ends and we head home with sleepy smiles.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions: Celebrating Independence Day in San Antonio

Where are the best fireworks in San Antonio?

Woodlawn Lake Park hosts the city’s official display at 9:30 p.m. SeaWorld and Six Flags also launch large shows if you prefer a theme-park vibe.

Are these events really free to attend?

Yes. Parades, Woodlawn festivities, and most community celebrations do not charge entry fees. Expect to pay only for food, drinks, or rides.

How early should we arrive for fireworks?

Plan to claim a spot by 8 p.m. Bring lawn chairs, blankets, and ear protection for young children. Parking fills fast so consider ride-share or public transit where available.

What if loud noises bother me or my kids?

Watch the morning parades and Alamo Salute, then choose a distant overlook for fireworks. Many veteran groups host quiet cookouts that offer a calmer setting.

Are pets allowed at these events?

Most parks allow leashed pets during the day, but fireworks crowds and noise can stress animals. If you bring a pet, keep plenty of water on hand and leave before the fireworks begin.
