CPS Energy Incentivizes Attic Insulation Upgrade for Energy Efficiency

Upgrading your attic insulation can significantly enhance energy efficiency in your home, reducing heating and cooling costs. Now, CPS Energy will offer rebates per square foot for customers installing new insulation in their attics.

Insulating your attic well can not only save money on energy bills, contributing to a greener environment but also improve your overall comfort. This is where CPS Energy steps in, with a unique proposition: pay you to enhance your insulation.

Who can benefit from this offer? All residential customers of CPS Energy, the city-owned utility, are eligible.

How does it function? The program aims to encourage customers to install superior-quality attic insulation. Based on the total square footage installed, CPS will pay you a rebate, granted certain conditions are met.

What are the conditions? The insulation must be installed between an air-conditioned living space and a non-air-conditioned attic. It should also be of a brand that clearly mentions the R-value on its packaging, and it should be new.

The R-value is a measure of a material's thermal resistance - its efficiency in preventing heat transfer. The higher the R-value, the better the insulation quality and subsequently, the cost. CPS is keen on seeing an improvement in this value, a testament to your home becoming more energy-efficient.

What should be the R-value? Depending on your attic's layout, the R-value varies. For attics with more than two feet of overhead clearance, existing insulation with R-value 14 or lower should be upgraded to R-38 or higher. In the case of attics with less than two feet of overhead clearance, the upgrade should be from R-11 or lower to R-19 or better.

What is the rebate value? The rebate varies with the size of the insulated space and whether you hire a contractor or do it yourself. CPS will pay you 35 cents per square foot for professional installation and 25 cents for DIY.

What's the verification process? CPS will refer to Bexar County property tax records to cross-verify the square footage listed on your rebate application and may send an inspector to check your attic.

What about the rebate limit and paperwork? The rebate can't exceed the total project cost. An itemized, dated receipt or invoice showing the installed insulation, its type, the old and new R-values, and the total expenditure should accompany the rebate application.

Where to submit? Applications can be mailed to CPS Energy c/o Residential Efficiency Programs, PO Box 830091, San Antonio, TX 78283. Copies of all documents should be retained.

Is the online application available? Yes, you can apply online.

How and when to apply? Once your application and supporting documents are reviewed and approved, CPS will issue you a check or pay the contractor directly. The rebate application should be submitted within 30 days of project completion, but not later than Jan. 31, 2024.

What about new homes? Unfortunately, new homes aren't eligible for these rebates.

For more information on the program, visit the CPS Energy website or contact them at 210-353-2728 or CPSEnergyResidential@clearesult.com. Remember, rebates are available on a first-come, first-served basis and are subject to change or termination at CPS Energy's discretion.
